Lee Alexander McQueen was born on March 17, 1969 in London, England. At the age of 16, he left school and was offered an apprenticeship at Saville Row with tailors Anderson & Shephard. He later apprenticed at Gieves & Hawkes, and then worked with theatrical costumers Angels and Bermans. At age 20, he began to work for designer Koji Tatsuno. McQueen traveled to Milan a year later and worked as Romeo Gigli's design assistant. When he returned to London, he enrolled at Central Saint Martin's College of Art & Design and received his master's degree in Fashion Design. In 1992, his MA collection was bought in its entirety by Isabella Blow, who became close friends with McQueen and convinced him to use his middle name as a designer.
After McQueen graduated, he started his own label. He was appointed Chief Designer at Givenchy in October 1996 and worked there until March 2001. In December 2000, 51% of McQueen's label was bought by the Gucci Group. He was named British Designer of the Year in 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003. In 2003, he was also named International Designer of the Year by the CFDA and awarded as A Most Excellent Commander of The British Empire by the Queen of England. In 2007, he won the Fashion Directors Award for his brand McQ and was named GQ Menswear Designer of the Year. On February 11, 2010, Lee Alexander McQueen's life ended, and the world lost a brilliant and legendary fashion designer.
